Pelosi leans toward Olympic boycott

Nancy Pelosi has always been a leader on the human rights question with China. Oddly, it was the Clinton administration, not a GOP administration, that was able to lift the ban on trade with China. I remember when that happened I wondered if the trade would incent China to be better in terms of human rights, rule of law, etc.

The Tibetans, the F’Gongers, the Uighurs, the prisoners who make cheap plastic shoes and lead-tainted products for import know differently. Progress has not been as swift, norĀ  as great as many had hoped.

So here’s Pelosi saying the U.S. should consider a boycott. Not a rip-roaring call for action. But it goes even further than demanding that Bush shouldn’t go to Beijing.
